Adriaan van Heerden

Based in Surrey, I work indoors, on location and in the studio. I cover a wide range of genres, including landscapes, portraits, travel, wildlife, abstracts, events, wedding photography and portfolios for models, musicians and actors. I welcome enquiries about weddings, portfolio shoots, print sales and commissions.

Originally from South Africa, I graduated with a PhD in Philosophy from Cambridge University (King’s College) in 2002. For me, photography – like philosophy – begins with wonder: wonder at the extraordinary ability of the world to reveal itself to the careful observer, and the power of photography to capture something of that revelation.

Photography enables us to freeze a moment and give it a kind of immortality, and the aspiration of the photographer-as-artist is not only to celebrate the obvious beauty of the world, but also to discover the unusual in the ordinary, and even to create a new way of seeing. In my photography I look for an angle that will bring a poetic quality to the composition, a frame that is able to capture something of the beauty, sublimity, absurdity and humour of existence.

My professional memberships include the Royal Photographic Society and the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers. I am a founding member of The Arts Collaboration (www.theartscollaboration.com) and have exhibited at various galleries in Surrey, Cheshire and London.
