Abel Kesteven
Having graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design 1992 and working as a freelance illustrator for eight years, I realized that my work was more suited to a fine art audience. With the freedom given to me by not having to follow clients instructions, I began to experiment more with colour, light and movement.
In the last five years (whilst continuing to paint urban street scenes and local parks) I have begun working with clay, focusing on the human form. I found that distorting body shape enabled me to create dynamic sculptures with a sense of the grotesque! Along with these sculptures, I have produced monoprints of people and animals. The two techniques often feed off each other and can be a welcome distraction to my painting!
My work has been exhibited throughout London and the home Counties, including Blackheath, Greenwich, Wonersh, Red Biddy and Henley Fine art galleries. I have exhibited and sold in both the Chelsea and Battersea art fairs, and am a member of the Croydon art society.
